India’s middleweight boxer Vijender Kumar crashes out of the Men’s 75kg boxing event at Beijing Olympics. However Vijender will still continue to win the bronze medal, India’s first medal in the boxing event at the Olympics. Cuba’s Emilio Correa Bateaux defeated Vijender by 8-5.
The event started with 2-0 lead by the Cubian Emilio in the first round. Vijender came back strongly the second round and took 3 points against Cuba’s 2 points, making the score to 4-3.
However in the third round, Emilio was very aggressive and took 3 points against Vijender nil points, making the score to 7-3. The last round, Cuba started with 1 early point and Vijender tried coming back by gathering 2 points (straight direct punches), but it was too late. Emilio was declared winner with final scores at 8-5. Vijender put a brave fight, but he lacked technique and finally failed to much experienced and higher ranked Emilio.
Our congratulations to Vijender Kumar for getting the medal for India. Again, with the kind of family background and support he is coming from, we should applaud his efforts. We hope with these efforts the sports authorities wake up and invest more in better infrastructure and facilities so that we strike Gold in coming commonwealth and Olympic Games.
