Saina Nehwal won the Chinese Taipei Open Badminton Championship by defeating unseeded Malaysian Li Ya Lydia Cheah 21-8, 21-19 in the final of the GP Gold event at Taipei today. This is her second grand prix crown and she is the first Indian Women to achieve this feat.
Saina Nehwal came into limelight with her win during Philippines Open Grand Prix in May 2006; however it was during Beijing Olympics when she raised hopes of the medal by defeating World Number four Chen Wang of Hong Kong to reach the quarter finals of Women Badminton Event. She even showed great effort during the quarter finals before bowing down to the World Number 16 in a 3 sets thriller. However, those matches boosted her confidence and that helped her to win the Chinese Taipei title.
“I guess this is perhaps my best performance so far. Of course my show in Beijing Olympics gave me a lot of confidence but I think I played here really well,” Saina said.
Heaps of congratulations and wishes for the great achievement. We hope she will continue her good work and bring more laurels to India. We would look forward to 2010 Gold Medal from Saina during the Commonwealth games and also the Asian games. Great Job Saina!
