shilpa_shetty_and_raj_kundra_7-copyShilpa joins the bevy of bollywood stars that are now associated with Indian Premier League (IPL). Shilpa Shetty and her London based boyfriend Raj Kundra have acquired 11.7 % of the winners of last season’s IPL Jamboree, Rajasthan Royals.

Rajasthan Royal was one team that had little star association when they started out last year in the premier league, they were the underdogs and were written off as a non-glamorous team lacking the media blitz that was enjoyed by some of the other teams for e.g. Kolkata Knight riders. But despite all odds and some serious team spirit aided by a never-say-die captain, the royals shoot to fame after beating Preity Zinta’s Kings XI.

This deal cements the fact that Indian Premier League is not just about sport, it never was. It’s a heady mix of glamour, entertainment and cricket. Other notable bollywood stars to be associated with IPL are Shah Rukh Khan (Kolkata Knight Riders) and Preity Zinta (Punjab King’s XI). Even Aamir khan showed interest in IPL sometime ago.

Shilpa Shetty will meet the captain Shane Warne in Goa next week. The auction of players for the upcoming season of IPL will also commence next week.

Lalit Modi (the architect of IPL) for one was very happy about this move, he said “I am extremely happy to welcome Shilpa and Raj into the IPL family and I am even more thrilled that the Indian Premier League has proved once again that it is a prudent investment opportunity even in these unprecedented times of global economic crises’.

The 11.7 per cent stake which has been acquired by Shilpa and Raj places the overall valuation of the Rajasthan Royals at nearly $140 million, which translates into an astronomical figure of 3733 per cent capital appreciation for Emerging Media, the owners of the fanchise.

So it appears that IPL is a safe haven for investment by the rich in these turbulent times
