Just the other day, a tribunal court lifted the ban on the right-wing Islamic outfit, SIMI, citing the government’s inability to provide sufficient evidence citing SIMI’s involvement in terrorist activities across the country. The court pointed the fact that the evidence provided was not backed up substantial documentation including FIR’s/witnesses and grounds on which the ban should be extended. From the details coming out of the press, it appears that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) officials fumbled when quizzed about the specifics of the case. These officials appear to have taken a casual approach towards addressing such a critical issue regarding national security.

This callous approach taken by the officials directly points to the seriousness with which the home ministry is handling anti-terrorism efforts in this country. It therefore isn’t surprising to see that there has been no progress at hitting the terrorist network within this country even after successive blasts over a number of years in which hundreds of innocent people have lost their lives. The faltering political will of the coalition govt against its fight for terrorism is underlined by the fact that UPA leaders like Laloo Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav (sometimes honourably called as Maulana Mulayam) has voiced against banning SIMI with Laloo going to the extent of comparing RSS with SIMI stating that if SIMI is banned, RSS should be too.

SIMI has been involved with terrorist strikes across the country since 2003; it has spread its tentacles far and wide under the cover of multiple Islamic outfits, despite crackdowns by the IB on Simi outfits, no major breakthrough has been made linking SIMI activists with bombings across the country. These activists are well-educated and are generally swayed by radicalism spread through multiple medium
