Dabangg - ‘Dabangg’ is a total masala entertainer and a must watch movie.
Starring: Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Sonu Sood, Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Om Puri, Anupam Kher and Mahesh Manjrekar
Producer: Arbaaz Khan
Director: Abhinav Kashyap
Rating: ***1/2
Salman Khan plays the character of a police officer whose name is Chulbul Pandey aka Robinhood Pandey. Salman and Arbaaz (Makhanchan) are step brothers. Salman as a police officer justifies every action of his. As the name Robinhood suggests, he takes away a pinch of the loot money that he extracts from politicians and dacoits and gives it away to those in need. He is fearless and uncorrupt in real terms.
The story unveils the love-hate relationship between the father (Vinod Khanna as Prajapati Pandey) and the son (Salman) and also with the step brother (Arbaaz). While on the other hand, Sonakshi (Rajo), who earns her living by carving pots, is a dedicated daughter who feels marriage is not on her cards. Mahesh Manjrekar plays the drunkard father to Sonakshi.
Salman’s mother is played by Dimple Kapadia, who always teaches him to keep loving his younger brother. But stepfather Vinod Khanna always plays tough with Salman. Om Puri just plays an ordinary police officer. Anupam Kher plays a politician who engages Sonu Sood (Cheddi Singh), the kingpin of the area. In the later half Anupam realises that Sonu is cheating him with the loot money. So Anupam instructs Salman to take care of Sonu while he would take care of his transfer. What happens to Sonakshi’s father and how Arbaaz gets entangled with Sonu Sood’s gang and also how Salman gets married and finally how the father-son relationship falls straight forms the crux of the story.
The story of the film is very simple. We have seen many such tales earlier. But the presentation, set in a typical Bihari style yet keeping in mind the contemporary context, works well for the film. The dialogues bring a smile to your face. Abhinav Sinha proves his worth as a filmmaker with this film. He deserves credit for presenting Salman so very naturally.
Music by Lalit Pandit, Sajid-Wajid has already been topping the music charts with tracks ranging from foot-tapping ones to melodious and romantic numbers. ‘Tere mast mast do nain’, ‘Munni badnaam’, ‘Chori kiya re jia’ and ‘Humka peeni hai’ have all been used well in the movie and deserve credit.
No stones have been left unturned even in the cinematography and editing departments.
Salman’s exuberant and honest performance at times makes one feel that the reel heartfelt, truthful, sensitive character being misunderstood is the real Salman. His love for his mother and his folks turns one emotional. Also, his true and respectful love for Sonakshi brings out his sincere feelings. Arbaaz is just okay. He still needs to brush up his acting skills. Sonakshi has played her character wonderfully despite being a first-timer. She not just looks beautiful but also showcases ample potential. Salman and Sonakshi’s on-screen chemistry sets the screen ablaze. Sonu Sood has done a magnificent job as the bad man. The rest of the cast have performed to the best of their abilities.
‘Dabangg’ is a total masala entertainer and a must watch movie for all the Hindi film buffs. Go watch the movie and fall in love with this upright police officer, Chulbul Pandey, for you certainly can’t call him corrupt!
