Even though SRK played safe with his production venture – taking frame by frame copy of the Malayalam film Katha Parayambul (Tmail version of Kuselan), adding big stars like Kareena, Deepika, Priyanka and yet apart from Irfan Khan’s brillant role, the movie fails to deliver what was expected from it.
The story as the title suggests revolves around Bilas Rao Pardesi (Irfan Khan) who works as a small-time barber in a village and is referred to as Billu Barber. Billu is married to Bindiya (Lara Dutta) and has two kids and their life is a bit of sweet and sour. And then, one day Sahir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) comes to the village to shoot his next film. Billu has been Sahir Khan’s classmate in his childhood days. When the village comes to know of this fact, their outlook towards Billu changes and overnight he becomes the most significant person for the villagers who want to get a glimpse of the star Sahir Khan.
And suddenly Billu starts getting all kind of attention and support from all walks of person from his village, who wants to find a way to meet the superstar Sahir Khan. And what happens next is quite natural to Bollywood Masala movie, which makes the movie quite average.
The problem with the movie has been its flat script. The story is quite straight without any twist and turns and people seems to predict what will happen next. SRK did try to add glamour to movie by bringing in three leading ladies from Bollywood for three big songs in the movie – Kareena, Priyanka and Deepika, yet on the story front it failed to appeal.
With select associations taking offence to the word ‘Barber’, the word has been muted in songs, but retained in dialogues.
On a whole, Billu Barber is strictly an average fare!
