8749A criminal case was lodged on Tuesday against Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Lok Sabha candidate Varun Gandhi for his alleged communal campaign speeches in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit constituency.

The non-bailable case against Varun Gandhi, the son of the late Sanjay Gandhi and Maneka Gandhi, was lodged in Barkeda police station, said District Magistrate, Pilibhit, MP Agarwal.

Earlier in the day, Varun Gandhi claimed that the CD containing his speech has been tampered with. “I know it has been (tampered with)”, he told TV channels while replying to a question.

“All I want to say is that tomorrow I will be addressing a press conference in Delhi and I will be clarifying my stand on every single issue….I will be addressing from a proper party forum,” the young scion of the estranged Gandhi family said.

At a recent election meeting in Pilibhit from where he is being fielded, Varun had said “this is not a ‘Hand’ (Congress symbol), it is the power of the ‘Lotus’ (BJP symbol). It will cut the head of ……. Jai Shri Ram.”

On a complaint from the Congress party, Varun was slapped with a notice by the Election Commission charging him with violation of the model code of conduct for elections for allegedly making communal remarks during a rally held on March 6 in Pilibhit.

Varun has also come under attack from within the party and its allies. Terming the comments as “shocking”, BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain demanded an unconditional apology from him while the party asked all its poll nominees to “practice caution” in their speech.

Well it is indeed shocking that Varun Gandhi could give such a vitriolic speech given that he has a surname which almost translates to Ahimsa. Though he is just a novice in the political sphere he is no kid either. He should understand that India is not a monolith- it’s always been home to a great diversity of culture and religion . Moreover, as an aspiring leader doesn’t he wish to represent all the people of his constituency? Why then was he defending a community against the other? Shameful indeed by what was revealed of himself and the idea he nurtures. If this is the kind of politicians we have, we can very well forget development and progress, rather we would have something interesting enacted every often on the political stage to engage ourselves.

Its such an irony that leaders can’t talk about progress and development or eradicating poverty, but are allegedly making communal remarks to boost their vote bank. At one part we are touching moon and progressing in International affair and at another part we have leader like Varun Gandhi who believe in divide and rule policy. I call all the person be beware of such leader and vote for Progress of India. Jai Hind!
