It has all the Ingredients of a potboiler Bollywood Thriller, yet very tragic end of a Bangalore Student.
A college student fleeing from the police after racing his bike down a main city thoroughfare was shot dead by Army guards after he tried to hide on the roof of a Brigadier’s house in the military area early Sunday.
A night of revelry ended in tragedy for Mohammed Mukarram Pasha. Mukarram, a 19-year-old first year B.Com student of Bangalore’s Baldwin Methodist’s College, and his friend were driving their motorcycle “well over the speed limit”, police said.
It was 1 am (Early Sunday Morning – 28th December 2008) when the Ulsoor traffic night patrol saw him riding `wheelie’ — on the back wheel with the front wheel up — and trying to zig-zag around the median near ASC Circle. The cops started chasing them. When they tried to flee, their bike skidded near ASC Circle. Mukarram and his friend abandoned the bike and started running.
While his friend managed to flee, Mukarram jumped the fence of an Army compound – ASC Records (South) – and started running frantically on the campus. Later, he climbed the rooftop of Brig. P S Ravindranath’s residence — also known as the Flag Staff House — which is just a barb-wired fence away from the military campus, on Trinity Church Road, in the heart of the city, at 1.10 am.
From the rooftop, Mukarram started making frantic calls to his friends and family. Security guards on night duty, who were searching for him, realized Mukarram was on the roof around 1.50 am, and asked him to come down.
There were six security guards — four on duty at the Brigadier’s house and another two from the military campus. They said to have warned the boy several times but he tried to run, and one of the guards shot him with a service weapon at 2.08 am. They fired two rounds (six bullets), of which one bullet hit Mukarram near the abdomen. The Brigadier informed the police control room about the incident.
According to police, Mukarram managed to jump the barricade after the bullet hit him. He had earlier called up his friends to pick him up, and a car was waiting for him. They rushed him to St Philomena’s Hospital at 2.20 am, where the doctors declared him “brought dead”. But at the hospital, there were no records of who admitted him, except for a phone number. By 2.35 am, police reached the hospital where his family had also arrived.
Brigadier P S Ravindranath, who spoke to the media, said he was sleeping when the incident took place and he called the police control room immediately after the incident.
Mukarram’s father Mushtaq Ahmed Khan, alias Babu, is a bus owner. The family stays in BTM Layout 1st stage.
The city police have registered a case against Mukarram. The guards who fired upon the student won’t face any action. City police commissioner Shankar Bidari said, “We have registered a case under Sections 448 and 103 of the IPC for trespassing. I have also ordered an inquiry by the additional commissioner of police (law and order).” There won’t be any action against the guards as the incident took place in a restricted army location.
The defence authorities in a statement said the Flag Staff House was “intruded by a man being chased by the police”. Senior army officers said around 1 am on Sunday, a man managed to enter the house. “After thorough search, the sentries on guard sensed the presence of somebody on the top of the house. Before the guards could apprehend the intruder, he jumped down and fled towards the compound wall towards the main road. When the intruder did not heed the armed guard’s warning to surrender, the intruder was fired upon,” the statement said.

There is no point arguing on who is right and who is wrong ! The most important thing in the whole incident is the illegal drag racing, running away from cops, entering a secured and restricted area, again running away instead of surrendering to the army. Middle of the night, dont expect the army men to understand if the opponent is a kid or a man or a terrorist. With the present situations around the country, no true army man will miss a chance to prove his dedication, courage and duty at a given chance like this. All whatever happened was in a very highly suspicious cicumstances and the oddest time of the night. The only lesson someone can learn from this whole thing is: Obey the rules and laws of the country, be a true citizen, be helpful to everyone. Blame games are part of every state, community, religion and family. Nobody gains anything out of all that. If the kid died on the road while doing the wheelie, hitting his head, would you blame the bike, road or the boy ? There are no answers for many things in life. But life goes on.
I guess there is no point in debating who was wrong or what will it be with the boy’s family etc. Whats more important are these:
– Will drag racers learn a lesson from this incident? Bangalore has witnessed too much rise in the population and new dangerous sports are experiemented by the youngsters. They should learn to do these sports under permissiable areas and under guidance.
— The police very well knew that he was a drag racers and not some militant. May be shooting in the air or shooting near the guy should have been done rather than shooting and killing. The army/police should also know its ok to let 100 criminals go free than to kill 1 innocent guy.
– To the parents, we all sympathize with you, but sir/madam, we should know where to restrict the freedom of the teenage so that they do not cause problems to themselves and others.
Khalid, I wonder who is immature here, from your words its clear that its you not a teenager who died because of some misunderstanding .What do you mean by “Our army”? Do you think he owns some other army? Please Stop this dividing policy, it cost/g much to our Land. If Intrusion into another person’s property deserves death, then majority of we Indians deserve Death.
Do we, so called SOVEREIGN,DEMOCRATIC,REPUBLIC, SOCIALIST and SECULAR country where in a teen aged guy got killed just because he Jumped into a restricted area and feel proud about it. Do you think a 19 year old waiting for New Year is shot to death and feel proud about it, by saying “he got what he deserves”?
Iam not blaming any one here, we have lost a citizen who is an Indian due to some gross misunderstandings. And defiantly this is not the method to teach lesson for a teenager by taking his life out. We have lost him, who knows he might have turned into a Super hero in near future!
Khalid I hope you will never trespass in your never future, if by any chance you do then what Mukarram has got in the name of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity even you will be awarded that.
It is proud to say that the longest written constitution of any sovereign nation in the world is ours, but Khalid I don’t find a single sentence which says “Kill the Trespasser”.

i stand with roshan and oppose khalid, Khalid he was a kid who just saw the fun part of wheelie and max he knew was a fracture or fine from cops, not only him i bet no one would have dreamt of being shot to death for such a issue, ya i agree that he did a wrong thing by entering a trespass restricted area, i dont think so that this boy understood what could be the consiquences for that, and FYI he wouldnt have thought him self as a superhero or any thing take your words back, i know at the end fault was from mukkarams end but the cost was too big for his parents, relatives and friends, they alll lost some one whom they loved, and at the last but not least, let me tell you theres no such thing called as “designated racing zones” for such racing activities so far.
I differ with you lakshmi! The fault is entirely that of parents and the boy. Parents – coz allowing kids to roam about 1-2 AM in the morning, this thing was bound to happen. And you expect to security person to wait and aim at his leg when he was not stopping. What if he was a terrorist!
This should be a lesson to all!
How can you argue that taking away somebodies life is appropriate punishment for a young boys stupidity. Agreed he was putting his own life and that of tohers by drag racing and it wasnt sensible at all to run away from the cops instead of surrendering but it appears to me that this is the action of an immature stupid boy who was not thinking right. But to argue that being shot to death for this is appropriate is just cruel. I agree that he could very easily have been shot in the leg or arm and maimed so that he could be caught . I still do not understand why that was not done and this extreme step was resorted to. Our sympathies with his family.
Sorry Khalid, i just disagree with you thinking. He He was a young boy who was immature and in fear he might have not understood what was right to do obviously he might have been frightened of the cops and even the cops shuld hv not shot at him as he was unarmed, I think they could have easily known that one as he was bare-handed and in fear he was trying to hide from them and escape outside. They should have at least shot him on his leg so that he could have saved, its really very hard to believe that Mukarram is no more. I know him from childhood he was not that sort of a boy, very sweet and humble……..and I think the pain that we are undergoing right now cant become less…..we all love u and miss u so much Mukarram….let ur soul rest in peace
He trespassed army territory. Anybody with half a brain knows that can lead to death. He should have surrendered to the cops instead of thinking he is some sort of a super hero. Just because he managed to escape the cops doesn’t mean he can make a fool of our army too. He got what he deserved. I hope other drag racers learn from this. Travel to designated racing zones and leave the public roads in peace. Dangerous driving is a crime.
Nobody here is to blame except Mukarram. It may sound insensitive, but he got what he deserved. You have to think of these things with a straight head. Nobody can think of themselves as a superhero and above the law. If you intend to break the law, you should also be strong enough to handle the consequences of such actions and not run like a child.
