Its old news by the time I write this post, but hey what the heck, the topic ‘Sanjeev Nanda found guilty in BMW case’ is such a makes-one-feel-happy news that i sat down to pen my thoughts.

After 9 years of courtroom drama which had all the ingredients of a masala bollywood movie, the Sanjeev Nanda BMW case in which Mr Sanjeev Nanda, son of arms dealer Suresh Nanda and grandson of former Navy chief S M Nanda was found guilty of mowing down 6 innocent lives on a chilly morning of 10 Jan, 1999 in Delhi. The 6 people, which included 3 policemen, were from poor background, their families were devastated as the only earning member of the family was killed, their poor background coupled with the powerful background of the guilty, Sanjeev Nanda, ensured that this case dragged on for full 9 years.

During these 9 years their were allegations of buying witnesses (the lone survivor said he had been hit by a truck and not a BMW), collusion between prosecution and defence to save the culprit and some real lobbying by the political circles to keep the case in cold. The case truly reflected the slow judicial process in our country and how a select privileged few could twist and turn the arms of law for their own good. A sting operation carried out by a television channel and the constant media pressure assured that this case always sprung up to life and was never lost in the dungeons of our legal systems.

Its one of the many high-profile cases involving the rich and the powerful in which the right judgment has been passed, albeit a bit delayed. Hats off to the crusaders who have managed to put the likes of Sanjeev Nanda and Vikash Yadav behind the bars
