Well what Mamta Banerjee did for Singur inspired Mayawati to do the same with Rae Bareilly.
Mayawati has done to Rai Bareilly and Uttar Pradesh what Mamata Banerjee did to Singur in West Bengal. Both of them are competing with each other to scuttle development projects to earn political gains.
While Mamata sabotaged the Singur Nano project to dislodge what would have been seen as a positive developmental project of her opponents, the left front after 30 years of rule, Mayawati is trying to derail the railway project in her state of Uttar Pradesh while she is still at the helm of affairs just because it is being set up in Sonia’s constituency, not forgetting that she has to settle scores with the UPA for not scraping her disproportionate asset case to which CBI famously referred ‘Maya’s source of wealth is a mystery’.
If there is one thing in common between Mamata Banerjee and Mayawati, it is… both are spoilsports! Both of them lack statesmanship and are least concerned about the development of their states. Their eyes are glued to the electoral gains they may make as a result of their petty politics. Ultimately, it is the people as well as the state of Uttar Pradesh who stand to lose.
Stepping up confrontation with Sonia Gandhi, the UP Government backed by Chief Minister Mayawati decided to cancel the allotment of land for a rail coach factory at Rae Bareli and prevent the Congress president Sonia Gandhi from addressing a rally in her Lok Sabha constituency on Tuesday, Oct 14.
Earlier, Mayawati had withdrawn land meant for the setting up of a rail coach factory in the area, which was stayed by the Allahabad High Court. Now the matter has now snowballed into a full blown political war between the Congress and the BSP. We are extremely grateful to the honourable High Court of Allahabad for giving a stay order to a very injudicious cancellation of the land allotment,” Digvijay Singh, All India Congress Committee General Secretary in-charge of UP, said. This kind of vicious powerplay was not seen even at the height of the cold war between Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and Sonia.
The Congress on Monday accused Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati of indulging in “petty politicking” by cancelling the allotment of land for a rail coach factory at Rae Bareli and announced that party president Sonia Gandhi would visit her constituency as scheduled.
“It is a politically motivated move and it is not expected of Ms. Mayawati to take such action,” Mr. Singh said at the party headquarters, after the decision of the High Court became known.
Party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said the government’s decision was anti-people, anti-development and “smacks of petty politicking of the worst kind,” one that went against the federal concept of India.
Mr. Singhvi said the project was approved in the 2006-07 budget with a capacity to produce 1,000 coaches a year. The project would have given direct employment to at least 10,000 people. Of the total 1,238 acres, land measuring 467 acres was with the government and 800 acres belonged to private parties and the panchayat. The indent for the land was issued once in July last and then again in August.
By rejecting the land allotment, Mayawati is shooing away an investment of over Rs.1,000 crore in Uttar Pradesh as also job opportunities, transport business and ancillary units that would have followed setting up of the coach factory.
Politicians like Mayawati & Mamta Banerjee form a part of a growing number of netas who are too busy trying to guard their political turf and can go to any lengths to protect it, however bad the outcome maybe for the Aam Aadmi
