A 29-year-old software engineer allegedly threw his four-day-old baby into a well in his house in Choolaimedu locality around 11.30 pm on Thursday. Niranjan Kumar then went to sleep as if nothing had happened.
His wife Sangeetha was alarmed on not seeing the child near her when she woke up around 3 am. When she asked Niranjan, he told her that he had killed the child, police said.
Sangeetha lodged a complaint with Choolaimedu police following which fire and rescue services personnel recovered the body from the well.
Police said Niranjan is a gold medallist from BITS, Pilani. He works as a software engineer in Bangalore. He got married about a year ago.
He had come to Chennai when Sangeetha gave birth to their child in a private hospital in Chennai four days ago.
Niranjan, who is under medication for stress, is believed to have been upset after the birth of the child because he did not want a child immediately after marriage.
He wanted Sangeetha, 22, a BE Computer Science graduate, to work. He had even suggested abortion.
He has been arrested and remanded in custody. He has been booked under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC.
