The cyber cell of Mumbai’s crime branch yesterday arrested a 40-year-old Pune resident, who is the assistant vice president of a multi-national company, on charges of cheating and trying to rape a doctor.

Rakesh Maria, joint commissioner of Mumbai police, said the incident dates back to April 18 last year when a lady doctor responded to an advertisement in Jeevan Saathi, a matrimonial website.

The advertiser gave his name as Raj and claimed to be based in Tokyo. After they exchanged photographs over the Internet, he asked the doctor to meet one Samir Parija. He even asked the woman to forward her semi-nude photographs to which she complied.

After the woman met Parija at hotel Taj Blue Diamond in Pune last April, she realised that her drink was spiked. She told the police that she remembered Parija taking off her clothes and clicking her in the nude.

Besides, the woman suspected that Raj and Parija could be the same person. A complaint was lodged with the crime branch before the police launched a manhunt for the suspect.

Investigators, after arresting Parija, learnt that he forwarded pictures of a model to lure the woman. Moreover, cops also recovered a large number of nude pictures from his possession.

What’s more, the investigation also revealed that Parija was already married and has an adopted daughter who lives with his family in Bangalore. The court has remanded Parija to police custody till March 9.
