Harassment at workplace - Soni Jagadish the latest victim | Managers charged abetting suicide

Soni Jagadish working with Nokia Company in Bangalore committed suicide on Friday 26th September 2008 citing harassment by her seniors as the reason for the extreme step. In her suicide note, she mentioned two Managers Teja and Sachin of harassing her and causing lot of mental trauma. The police have charged both the managers under IPC 306, abetting sucide. Both the managers are absconding since her death.

Soni Jagadish hails from Mysore and her father works as a Central Government employee. Soni was a very ambitious girl and wanted to make it big in Bangalore. She was staying in Jayanagar IX block, Bangalore. She did not report at work on Friday, 26th September and her cell phone was also switched off. Her colleagues and friends contacted her father and with the help of the police when they break open her house, they found her hanging. There were suicide notes on the floor, addressed to her parents, her brother and her close friend Venkat. Seems like there was yet another note accusing the managers, where she said she was harassed because she refused to entertain the guys’ team. Police are investigating as to what exactly she meant by that and questioning all colleagues and friends. Police have further sealed her cubicle so that no evidence can be tampered. She was working Nokia Branch Office in Prestige Tech Park in Devaravisanhallai.

On Monday, members of Karantaka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) staged a dharna in front of the Nokia Office demanding compensation of Indian Rupees 1 Million for Soni’s family. Praveen Kumar Shetty from KRV said that the management has showed the “Order of Dismissal” to those managers and has agreed to pay compensation to the family of Soni.

Both the managers are missing and Police said since they did not present themselves and clarified their stand, they think managers are absconding and have really harassed the employee. The management of Nokia Company are extending full support to the police for fair investigation.

The cases of harassment at workplace are on rise and many go unreported fearing loosing job or other social abuse. Only when the case goes this extreme do these matters come into picture. High time the company management should look into the matter of ensuring safe working environment specially for the women section.

Very shocking,but this is everyday story of girls working in company call centers and IT firms. Girls who listen to the demands get good pay benefits, but who does not are harassed and not given good perks. I was also approached by my senior in the last company and he was married also. I had to change my job because of that.

Soni’s case might bring some hope to end this harassment.

This is not going to end sonali until we have men who do not know how to respect women.

But u know what I feel: We find such harassment much only in India because here percentage of girls who oppose for men’s demands is large,. But in western culture, its just a matter of JOB ADJUSTMENT. But we Indian girls are brought up with some ethics and values from our traditions. But the men are so much influenced by this western culture they forget they are in INDIA.

But there are also girls who encourage such acts to these days making way for men to demand more. We should equally punish men who demand and girls who fulfill…

We have not made any judgment here. We have narrated the story as per the media, reports from press. We have not accused the managers that they are the culprits. The Police is saying so! And if they are clean, why cant they release statements or come and face the trial.

We would say its better to face the trial and face the world than to walk off as that would just make the matter worse.

Very easy for you to write have “Fun”.. Can you imagine what is the condition of Soni’s family? Its high time truth should come out and if guilty, the accused should be given severest punishment so that other tremble before doing such acts!

The truth is Soni Jagdish was a girl with a lose character.

Her boyfriend’s name is Venkat (The one to whom one of the suicide notes is addressed).

As already mentioned above, she was very ambitious and was sleeping around with her managers. When her boyfriend found out the truth, she felt guilty and committed suicide.

She blamed the managers to make the whole story look real.

She left all the money for her boyfriend in order to assuage her guilt.

I am very happy that one more bitch died. Females are always manipulative by nature. They have been troubling men since the time the world started.

And with the present state in India, I feel very happy whenever a female is raped or murdered.

Rockon, few isolated cases of yours cannot overshadow large truth behind dowry, harassment of women at work. Even the labour court and inspectors warns the management to take precaution for the women employees else they charge the company under labour laws. So all those laws, people, politicians, police - all are wrong and some Family bachao Andolan team are right?

The fact remains Soni is dead and she has put the blame on the managers. Can u go and save them? if yes, go ahead!

I do not know what is the debate about? 56,000 men commit suicide every year and no one even whispers about their deaths!

I am a harassed husband myself. I am very proud to say that I have killed 2 women and raped 5 women till date. Go and do whatever you can. I have learned that a crime is a crime only when it is proven. I suffered for 7 years because my wife false accused me of dowry charges. Both my parents died in these 7 years. My sister committed suicide. Now, I will take revenge from all the bitches out there.

I was not defeated but was shocked to hear nonsensical debate by your leader Rahul. I requested my admin that I cannot comment more and cannot make you all understand. Rahul and his friends had restored to cheap language to prove their point and this was below my dignity to even reply to those comments.

I do not have any movement, I m writing this posts based on facts we have collected. And if you read I have not given my verdict that managers are guilty, I have mentioned that Police says so. So if you think that is wrong, question Police’s stand first.

About your facts:

1. Unsafe men or women - You need to define what ‘unsafe’ means here? If you are referring to safety from terrorists and bomb blasts, that a different issue. If it comes with harassment etc, women are by large many in numbers and harassed badly. Every day there are reports of sexual harassment and sexual favours. A german tourist was raped in Chandigarh recently, you will definitely say it was with consensus right? So Yes women are far more unsafe than men! If you feel that men are unsafe, try to do this - Send your wife, sister or girlfriend at midnight alone and send your male friend alone - See the difference of treatment they get at night!

2. Income Tax - So if male pay more taxes, do they have rights to harass women, what crap comparison? Welfare for men, again a separate issue. If the manager in this case has really harassed the girl and even if he pays 10 times the tax, it does not justify his move!

3. 56,000 men commit suicide - I agree men are committing more suicides then women - but there is no reports on the facts that harassed men by women are committing more suicides then harassed women by men. And yes, men and their in laws burn the brides, so question of suicide will not come in picture.

Rakesh, I have not put this post to make any national issue or gain popularity. I have accounts of many women who keep quite because of the harassment at work. Men are harassed as well, but that’s due to work load. Women are asked to “COMPROMISE” in every field to make sure they get their due. Yes of late, women/girls are more ready to submit themselves to get their work done, but I m not referring those class of girls. They have their own sets of problems and desires. If Soni is proved to be one of them, I will be the first to update this blog and write GOOD she committed suicide. So let’s wait for the final verdict!

How do you know that she is bad? have u seen her? i know her as i also come from the same place and i know her through my friend. i know that she is not a loose character girl. infact she is very decent girl and from a very good family.

I respect women, I am surrounded all good women in my life - my wife, my daughter, my sister and my mother. praveen even remember your mother and sister were women, just because they do not exists in the world do not think they will not feel hurt with your statements!

If managers who ran away / absconding proves nothing. They are afraid as they can get bail & give facts.

In India Domestic Violence [DV] can only by men. Do people know that Indian women are more violent than African & American women & DV can only be filed by woman. I know an old lady who is harassed by her daughter in law & she cannot complain under DV as woman can not be prosecuted under DV WHY?

I know a person whose father committed suicide due to fale dowry case by 498a girl.

When any woman is subjected to cruelty it is news and whole in laws are behind bar. When any man commits suicide saying that he is doing so due to his wife no one listens & no one is punished for abetting suicide.

There is no punishment for false FIR of dowry. WHY????

Law in general is person is innocent untill proven otherwise. 498A says person is guilty untill proven otherwise. Are women from family of Harish Chander ???? They are misusing this law for extortion without any restrain from Govt.

This is double standard.

All noted as to what said and yes you are right there should be equal rights for men and if women are found guilty, they should be given equal sever punishment as men. Dowry laws need amendments and if a girl is found guilty of misusing, she should be given double punishments. However, all these facts and debate does not allow men to justify harassment to women, raping women or killing her (as said by Mr praveen, I hate to take his name).

Managers should contact their company and lawyers and ask Police for other proofs except for the one left by Soni. Police should not just arrest them and go deep in their investigations. We are with the managers if they are innocent, but then running away is just raising suspicions.

Finally, if there are good men, there are bad men as well. if there are good women, there are bad women as well. Whatever the ratio or numbers is, this does not give rights to anyone to tell women are bad, i will rape them, i will kill them etc.

If that girl slept with the boss, why did Boss Sleep, why didnt he bring out that truth. Without demand there is no supply. The girl might have asked for raise and the boss might have said ok sleep and then I will increase. I do not support those girls, but here both girl and her BOSS are wrong.

I know 100s of cases where boss and senior managers have asked for favours for giving benefits, so? Does that mean I started saying all men are animal or demons?

Do not give one off example or one of case to justify that all women are bad. Soni committed suicide and she has named her managers for harassment. If managers are innocent, prove it, else face the punishments!

I know Mr. Sucin personally…
I think He ran away because of the fear as he is from a good cultured family and in a respectable position in the society.
He is a role model to the youth. He is well mannered and a guy from a good family. He is a very silent person. He won’t talk loud itself how can he harass any girl that who is much lowers in the great who does not report to him
He is a Brahmin with lots of devotion to god and respect for men and women. He gets up at 4 in the morning and does pooja to 16 saligram”s (god) .this is not an ordinary person’s job. He won’t drink a drop of water out side. He is a regular visitor of parakalamatta and swamy Rangapriya. If any body like to enquire about his character then can visit these matt’s. He is having a wife with two children. The girl is 8years old and the baby boy is just a month old.
I just want all women activist to think only once. What will be the condition of his wife (people with a little medical knowledge will be knowing what will be the mental and physical condition of a women after delivering baby) and his mother before talking any thing about this guy? I want these people to visit them and know

Thank you for the details of Mr. Sachin. My blog is not anti-men like those of savethefamily people, who are bitten once and have given their verdict for all women in the world.

We sympathize with Sachin’s family and if he is innocent we all stand by him. Guess friends like you all can come forward and voice your vote for him. However think from Soni’s family point of view… They had their daughter commit suicide because of harassment by the managers. So truth has to be come out and the culprits, if any, punished.

My advice is for Sachin is to give his statement and have his company and colleagues support it, so that he has enough support to voice before the police. And help police resolve the case. If not Sachin, what caused suicide, truth has to come out!

And about the missing managers. so listen if you know indian law and indian police which i’m sure you dont know. you are just here to SPIT VENOM ON MEN. once you are booked in a non-bailable case its best that you go in hiding and get an anticipatory bail. When my wife filed harrassment case against my 50+ aged parents what do you want they spend several nights in jail.
Dont worry soon you will come to know when we’ll ask your sister in law will file a case against your entire family and then some other rips will report that you and your family is guilty because you have gone into hiding.

where did you find double standards. read my last blog again, I never said all TECHIES! I said Dowry by Techies, sorry that does not account to all men community. I have never been anti-men and I respect men community as much as I do for women.

My data are based on my facts based on my discussions with various groups, both working in MNCs and non MNC companies. And there are media reports to support that. So I do not need to justify that. And if you feel offended by my writing, which are hard facts, you are most welcome to browse other posts

Regarding harassment at workplace, the day women start speaking abt the harassment there will be flood of issues all over. Its just they keep it within themselves barring some who take hard steps like Soni did.

I m again not saying Managers are culprits, prove me in my post if I said that. Police have said that they are at large and so they have issued warrants against them. My advice of coming in the front, ofcourse meant that they should present all good reasons to prove themselves innocent. And if they want to do with Anticipatory bail, well and good. I would not like Sachin to be behind the bars if he is innocent and I sympathize with his family as well.

So, stop jumping to conclusions. A girl committed suicide and thats a extreme step! There has to have some very bad reasons behind that. If anyone is the reason behind her suicide, he/she should be punished and strong message should be passed. And if she was fake with her note, definitely she will be labelled as culprits for sure.

Guys..we need to look a hard look at the fact before doing a public trial here.
— What would any self respecting manager do in a situation when an employee sits around for 1.5 yrs doing nothing.
— What would be the mental stability of a girl who writes to her parents in her last letter …”finally you couldn’t find me a guy of my choice”
— Spare the poor girl a thought. I presume she was under severe depression…and probably needed medical help. Questioning her character is really unfair!
— Lets not forget fate could easily have placed us in the shoes of Soni or the manager!

How much of this report is fact based. Please don’t do trial by media. If you need support and counselling consult a doctor and lead your own life. Let the courts do the investigation and find out truth. Men are blamed very easily in this country and with out any investigation or evidence at all. Imagine what goes on the family of these men if you talk bad about them with out any evidence and purely based on your emotional sense.

Recently all the Media accused Dr. Rajesh Talwar that he killed his own doctor and what the was the truth in the End ? See how the life of this Man was destroyed for ever by irresponsible people like you who propagate stories like this with out any evidences or proof. Only report the facts after the things have been proved conclusively in courts.

If you want to gossip then start talking about your own family and find faults with in yourself and your family and then start cleaning the society later.

Harassment at work place exists. It can be in any form, for any gender. It can be in nature of sexual harassment, it can be in form of work/stress harassment. Bharath and many others who have said that harassment does not exist, open your eyes, browse through internet, news channel, there are several cases of sexual harassment, several consultant centers for redress-al of these issues and many cases of death because of harassment. I m not writing for any kind of popularity or any attention. These are the evils of the society that needs to do. Even if there is one case of Sexual Harassment or death because of that I will continue to write. And further, do not use your problems in life as a measuring rod for ignoring these problems.

Further, more than reports from anyone, I know about my friends working specially in the call centers and BPOs who report harassment at workplace in different forms - from intentional touching to repeated request of late night outing, from promotions to failures - many team leaders have directly indirectly hinted the girls that if they turn down the favors it can affect the careers. Some weaker girls (And I strongly condemn those girls) submit for their personal or family needs, while some change the job only to find that different forms of harassment exists everywhere.
