Soni Jagadish working with Nokia Company in Bangalore committed suicide on Friday 26th September 2008 citing harassment by her seniors as the reason for the extreme step. In her suicide note, she mentioned two Managers Teja and Sachin of harassing her and causing lot of mental trauma. The police have charged both the managers under IPC 306, abetting sucide. Both the managers are absconding since her death.
Soni Jagadish hails from Mysore and her father works as a Central Government employee. Soni was a very ambitious girl and wanted to make it big in Bangalore. She was staying in Jayanagar IX block, Bangalore. She did not report at work on Friday, 26th September and her cell phone was also switched off. Her colleagues and friends contacted her father and with the help of the police when they break open her house, they found her hanging. There were suicide notes on the floor, addressed to her parents, her brother and her close friend Venkat. Seems like there was yet another note accusing the managers, where she said she was harassed because she refused to entertain the guys’ team. Police are investigating as to what exactly she meant by that and questioning all colleagues and friends. Police have further sealed her cubicle so that no evidence can be tampered. She was working Nokia Branch Office in Prestige Tech Park in Devaravisanhallai.
On Monday, members of Karantaka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) staged a dharna in front of the Nokia Office demanding compensation of Indian Rupees 1 Million for Soni’s family. Praveen Kumar Shetty from KRV said that the management has showed the “Order of Dismissal” to those managers and has agreed to pay compensation to the family of Soni.
Both the managers are missing and Police said since they did not present themselves and clarified their stand, they think managers are absconding and have really harassed the employee. The management of Nokia Company are extending full support to the police for fair investigation.
The cases of harassment at workplace are on rise and many go unreported fearing loosing job or other social abuse. Only when the case goes this extreme do these matters come into picture. High time the company management should look into the matter of ensuring safe working environment specially for the women section.

Harassment at work place exists. It can be in any form, for any gender. It can be in nature of sexual harassment, it can be in form of work/stress harassment. Thats why there are various trainings and guidelines issues to employer to strongly implement the same. If you all have doubts, open Labour Laws or ask your HR, he/she will be able to help you understand that.
Further as per reports coming from “National Commission for Women (NCW)”, the cases of SEXUAL HARASSMENT AT WORK PLACE in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh are the highest. Again those are registered cases, there are many that goes unreported.
Renuka Choudhary is planning to introduce a legislation titled ‘Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace, 2006′, drafted by the NCW.
Bharath and many others who have said that harassment does not exist, open your eyes, browse through internet, news channel, there are several cases of sexual harassment, several consultant centers for redress-al of these issues and many cases of death because of harassment. I m not writing for any kind of popularity or any attention. These are the evils of the society that needs to do. Even if there is one case of Sexual Harassment or death because of that I will continue to write. And further, do not use your problems in life as a measuring rod for ignoring these problems.
Further, more than reports from anyone, I know about my friends working specially in the call centers and BPOs who report harassment at workplace in different forms – from intentional touching to repeated request of late night outing, from promotions to failures – many team leaders have directly indirectly hinted the girls that if they turn down the favors it can affect the careers. Some weaker girls (And I strongly condemn those girls) submit for their personal or family needs, while some change the job only to find that different forms of harassment exists everywhere.

How much of this report is fact based. Please don’t do trial by media. If you need support and counselling consult a doctor and lead your own life. Let the courts do the investigation and find out truth. Men are blamed very easily in this country and with out any investigation or evidence at all. Imagine what goes on the family of these men if you talk bad about them with out any evidence and purely based on your emotional sense.
Recently all the Media accused Dr. Rajesh Talwar that he killed his own doctor and what the was the truth in the End ? See how the life of this Man was destroyed for ever by irresponsible people like you who propagate stories like this with out any evidences or proof. Only report the facts after the things have been proved conclusively in courts.
If you want to gossip then start talking about your own family and find faults with in yourself and your family and then start cleaning the society later.
