We now know why many rape victims in our country keep the most terrifying moment of their life to themselves rather than going to judicial system. The mother of the 14 year old German girl who was allegedly raped, later withdrew the case as she was let down by the judicial verdict and was harassed and insulted by police very badly.
Goa Education Minister Atanasio Monserratte’s son Rohit was arrested in connection with the rape of a German teenager (14 years old) and sending lewd SMS messages on November 4th 2008. Rohit is 21 years old and a MBA student and he was accused by a German woman of raping her minor daughter on October 2.
In her complaint submitted to the Calangute police on Oct 2, the German mother had complained that Rohit had raped her daughter and was sending her lewd SMSs. The police refused to register the complaint and took cognizance of it 12 days later, only after the German Consul General Walter Stechel wrote to the Goa chief secretary asking him to “vigorously” investigate the case.
The police and the state administration, whose role has been described as “dubious” by Rodrigues (victim mother’s counsel), delayed
the arrest of Rohit by more than a fortnight, on the pretext that the arrest would be carried out only after the girl deposed before a magistrate. Rodrigues had claimed that the state administration was “colluding to ensure that Rohit wasn’t arrested”. The girl finally deposed before a magistrate after some initial reluctance on November 1st. Rohit went into hiding soon after that. He then appeared before the police accompanied by his father, and surrendered before Police Inspector Tushar Vernekar at Calangute police station. A fresh warrant was issued against Rohit on Monday and was arrested.
Not even a week had passed after issuing arrest warrant to Rohit, his father (our honorable minister) made sky and earth one and Rohit was ultimately granted conditional bail bond of Rs.10,000 in Panaji on 10th November, Monday, a day after the victim’s mother sought to withdraw her complaint saying she was “frustrated” with the police probe.
This is what the victim’s mother had to say:
“We’re scared of being ‘Scarlett 2′. Since the day we have filed the complaint, life has become hell for me and my daughter. There have been allegations and counter allegations against me in the media. Now we’ve realized that we’re trapped in a situation not in our interest. A minor child has been abused. But my complaint for my minor daughter has only led to more and more harassment. We are crushed under the weight of the rich and mighty, and as strangers unable to beat the system”.
On the other hand, our honorable minister claims “I am convinced that he is innocent”, “All legal brains will be brought where my son is involved”, “Justice will prevail and truth will come out”
This is such a pathetic state for a mother who leaves her country and comes to another country with a hope that they would be treated like god especially in India where the saying “Athithi Devo Bhava” is prevailed. But alas, she ends up with such a pathetic tragedy with her daughter who is still so young for such a fate. Couple of months back, a guy was sentenced to death for raping a minor. The guy was obviously not MP’s son hence our law and order system worked tooth and nail on that case. But when it comes to a criminal like MP’s son, justice will never be done. This gives such a bad name to the whole country. Down the line no one would remember Rohit did such a thing, but they would say an Indian did which is so shameful. If this was a reverted case, wherein if the minister had a daughter and if she was raped, then the police would have pinned down to find who it was and he would have definitely had a death sentence. But alas, our minister has 2 sons. one has shown his colors. Is the other coming on the prowl? only time can tell…
This is not the only case we are here talking about. There are thousands of rape cases which are going unnoticed. Few days ago, the Scarlett rape and murder case also showed no positive results, I think its high time we stand up united and change some of the judicial decisions. Some hardcore decisions should be taken on all those people (no matter who’s son he is) who are convicted of committing a big crime like RAPE. It seems so easy for a man to show such cheap act, but it is so difficult to even think from a girl’s perspective who would have gone through it. All the men who are proved to be guilty of rape should be hanged in public with no mercy.
