On July 15 1997, the rarefied world of high fashion was sent into a spiral of shock as Gianni Versace was shot dead on the steps of his home in Miami's South Beach. The killer was babyfaced Andrew Cunanan who shot Versace first in the face and then in his neck. Incredibly, the Italian designer did not die instantly but later, at the Mount Sinai Medical Centre. Just a few days later, Cunanan turned the same gun on himself and was found dead in a houseboat. There is still no clear motive for the murder. The business of Versace's fashion empire passed to his two brothers, Santo and Jorge, and his sister Donatella took over as design head.
