Recently Larissa Ramos of Brazil won the Miss World 2009 title at the island resort of Boracay in central Philippines. Along with Miss Universe and Miss World contests, Miss Earth is one of the three largest beauty pageants in the world in terms of the number of national-level competitions to participate in the world finals.

Miss Earth is an annual international beauty pageant that promotes environmental awareness. The reigning titleholders dedicate their year to promote environmental projects and to address issues concerning to the environment. Carousel Productions organized and launched the first Miss Earth beauty pageant in 2001. It is intended to actively promote the preservation of the environment. Canadian beauty, Jessica, after winning the crown, was involved with the Cool Energy Exhibition in December 2007 with the theme: "Care for the Change". More than 20 companies, NGOs and other groups participated in this exposition held in the Peninsula Island inside the Nusa Dua resort showcasing displays about wildlife conservation, energy and forest.
