Immediately after being crowned Miss World 1994, Aishwarya Rai spoke of her dream for peace for this world, and her desire to be an ambassador of peace during her one-year reign.

What qualities should the Miss world 1994 embody? To this question at the pageant, she replied,” The Miss Worlds that we have had to date have been proof enough that they must have compassion for the underprivileged and not only to the people who have status and stature. We have to look beyond the barriers that man has set for ourselves – of nationality and color. That would make a true person, real person.”

The best actress award for the film Hum Dil De… was the turning point in her film career. She went on to do act in Taal and Mohabbatein. Then Devdas for which she once more won the Film fare Best Actress Award. After storming Bollywood, she went for global cinema. Her performance in Bride and Prejudice, Provoked, Pink Panther 2 won her international acclaim. Her performance in Guru, Jodhaa Akbar, and Dhoom 2…has established her as Bollywood’s leading lady.

After failed romances with Salman Khan and then Viveik Oberoi, Aishwarya married Abhishek Bachchan on April 20, 2007 and became part of the one of the most distinguished families in Indian cinema. Their wedding was one of the most talked-about and long-awaited wedding in India.” Aishwarya is my senior but she’s been wonderful and a real pleasure to work with. She’s professional, talented, warm and co-operative,” Abhishek had said prior to the wedding.

Aishwarya has won Star Screen Awards, Int’l Indian film Academy awards, Zee Cine awards, Star dust awards and Sansui awards in her movie career. In 2003, she became the first Indian actor to be a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2004, she was declared world’s most attractive woman by Hello! and was also chosen as one of Time Magazine of repute. This year she was honoured with one of the most prestigious civilian awards in India – the Padma Shri.
